I’ve been a fan of Micah’s work for a while now due to his simple and whimsical designs. I was especially drawn to his signature Ceramic Nar Hats (I own two personally), so I knew I had to include them in this Santa Fe Found collection. I asked Micah if he could make miniature versions of the hats and attach leather so they can be used as ornaments or wall hangings, and he made it happen! You can shop the ornaments here.

How long have you been doing your craft/business, and how did you get started?

I started working with clay seven years ago in the ceramics studio at City College of San Francisco. I took as many classes as I possibly could. After a few semesters I moved to a shared studio and kept developing/refining my work. Along the way I had a friend in Marfa, TX, who was an encouraging supporter of my work and offered to sell it in their store.

What was your professional journey before working in this field?

My professional journey has always included art in one form or another. While I was working on my ceramics at night, by day I was a full time Program Coordinator for a unique art and education program at the San Francisco dump. My job allowed me to spend lots of time brainstorming with professional artists as well as ample inspiration from the materials I recovered from the public disposal and recycling area. My position at this program stemmed from my own residency that culminated with an exhibition and body of work that included drawings, prints, and collage.

What makes your pieces special?

The drawings and designs on my pieces are informed by my practice of collecting vintage photos, paper ephemera, and obscure texts. Through the use of minimal glaze techniques, it is my intention to emphasize the clay's texture and color.

What’s the biggest challenge you face in your work?

Staying focused and trusting my instincts.

What advice can you give to budding creatives and entrepreneurs in Santa Fe?

Keep chugging along! There’s a reason they call it an “art practice”.

How long have you been in Santa Fe and what brought you here?

I’ve been in Santa Fe for just about two years now. I’m originally from the very southwest corner of Utah and after living and working in San Francisco for 18 years, I had a strong pull back to the southwest landscape, so Hannah (my wife) and I came up with a three year plan to move us and our businesses to Santa Fe.

What do you like most about Santa Fe?

I love the sunshine and landscape. You can be up in the mountains and 30 minutes later you're out in the desert!

At the end of the day, why do you do what you do?

When a piece is completed and all the different elements have come together from an idea in my head, it is just the most satisfying feeling.

Do you and your family have any special holiday traditions?

Last year was our first year cutting down our own Christmas tree, which I'd like to carry on as a special tradition.

What are you most looking forward to this holiday season?

Pie!
